Fiction Short Story

4th Aug 2023

I'm in my final year of high school, and achieving a high score is crucial for me to get into the university of my choice. Unlike some students who can memorize material quickly, I need to dedicate extra hours to my studies. It's become a routine for me to study late into the night, and more often than not, I find myself falling asleep at my desk.

Living in the countryside comes with its own set of challenges. Most days, we don't have access to continuous electricity, and my studies are illuminated by the gentle flicker of a candle. I'm the only child, and recognizing the importance of education, my parents support my academic endeavors with everything they have.

Our home, a two-story structure made of wood and brick, holds a special place in my heart. My study room, located on the second floor, has a window that offers an enchanting view of the outside world. On full moon nights, the silver glow adds magic to my late-night studies. But it's not just the moon that's kept me company. From my window, I began to notice another distant candlelight, twinkling every night just like mine.

One evening, curiosity welled up within me. Who else was up studying as late as I was? The light was distant and hazy, making it difficult to discern its source. While I couldn't see the person, that single candlelight appeared every night without fail.

Months passed, and that distant light became a comforting presence. Some nights, it would extinguish before mine, while on others, it stayed lit until I drifted off to sleep. It made me feel a sense of camaraderie, a gentle reminder that I wasn't alone in my pursuit.

To be continued.......

With Love
