What is BIM (Building Information Modelling)?

BIM Introduction

Building Information Modeling (BIM) streamlines construction management, offering significant time and cost savings compared to traditional methods. BIM utilizes various platforms like Revit, Tekla, and Archicad to merge 3D modeling with detailed informational inputs. This integration allows for the efficient creation of precise 3D models based on actual project details. These models facilitate the easy generation of drawings and quantifications. Additionally, coordination tools such as Navisworks or Solibri enhance project management by enabling clear visibility of all issues. This transparency allows team members to address, amend, and resolve issues effectively during meetings. By moving away from traditional 2D drafting, BIM not only increases productivity on site but also reduces costs associated with common construction errors.

How to develop BIM Model for project and how many?

BIM developing process

In construction, the process is divided into three main stages: the Design Stage, the Construction Stage, and the As-built Stage. Initially, we develop our first model based on the Tender model. Subsequently, this is segmented into individual models specific to each discipline, often resulting in six or more distinct models. During this phase, it is also necessary to create a Combined Services Drawing Model followed by a Federated Model for the purpose of coordination.

What is the most challenging part of explaining BIM to outsiders?

BIM usage

Building Information Modelling (BIM), is commonly understood and visualized as 3D modeling. Essentially, we develop 3D models based on project requirements. However, the ongoing challenge is that many outsiders remain unaware of why the BIM process is used in construction and the benefits it provides. All BIM models are fundamentally 3D models. The outputs vary, some may be animations, others could be drawing sheets, and some might be calculation sheets. We often face challenges when trying to explain BIM succinctly within a few minutes. Therefore, we've developed a better approach to clearly illustrate what BIM is all about. "In the BIM process, we develop 3D models and enrich them with construction-related information. We utilize these models for coordination, monitoring project progress, managing progress claims, educating workers on construction safety, and incorporating building and materials data for operations and future maintenance." The BIM process encompasses multiple dimensions, starting from 3D, extending through 4D and 5D, and progressing up to n-Dimensions.
